The job of brakes is to turn speed into heat. When you racing your Camaro or Firebird, the brakes are working harder than usual, and reach much higher temperatures. Brake fluid boils and brake pads fade if you exceed their max temperature, leaving you without brakes. The easiest way to prevent this is by forcing air through the rotor, which takes the heat away from it as quickly as possible. The effective cooling at racing speeds can be compared to upgrading rotor size by 2 inches in diameter, but racing brake pad compounds are still recommended for track sessions.
Simply aiming a brake duct at the center of the rotor is a start, but the air just cools one side of the disc, which can cause cracking and warping. It's also not forced to go through the rotor itself, so the surface area is much less, and is not very efficient.
The SPD brake ducts seal against the rotor, so all the air is forced to go through the center of the disc, rushing past the cooling vanes, and cooling both the inside and outside rotor faces from the center. This limits thermal distortion, and helps prevent warping from cooling just one side.
These spindle brake duct hats bolt directly to the front spindle of the 82-92 Camaro/Firebird, in place of the factory dust shield. They have a nozzle for a 3" duct, and seal the center of the rotor to the brake duct. This forces air through the center of the rotor to cool the braking system as quickly as possible.
Our duct kits are available for the factory 82-92 Camaro/Firebird spindle with 10.4" rotor single piston caliper brakes, 12" 1LE factory high performance double piston brakes, LS1 brake swaps, and C5 brake swaps. We can also make custom brake duct hats for Alcon, Brembo, Wilwood, and other brakes - just ask.
The duct kits include left and right spindle hats with 3" beaded hose nozzles as well as necessary mounting hardware.
